From Pack House to Peaceful Garden: Why We Grow What We Grow

At The Higher Calm, everything we grow has roots - in soil, in seasons, and in story.
Long before the idea of a peaceful retreat ever bloomed, the corrugated metal barn on our property served as a tobacco pack house. Built for rhythm and labor, it once echoed with the sounds of sorting, grading, and preparing harvests - the heartbeat of a working Southern farm.
That barn still stands today. Weathered but steady. No longer used for crops, it now anchors a quiet landscape of calm, creativity, and growth. While the roses grow in a separate garden space, the barn and the blossoms tell the same story - one of transformation.

A Garden That Listens to the Seasons

Throughout our property in Guilford County, North Carolina, we grow an evolving mix of roses, flowering plants, and native growth - each responding to the pace of the earth, not the rush of the clock.
• In early spring, new life stirs: buds emerge, the light shifts, and the walking paths come alive with green.
• By late spring and early summer, the rose garden is at its peak - vibrant, fragrant, and full of color.
• Throughout summer, you’ll find sunflowers, hummingbirds, mushrooms, and surprise bursts of wild beauty.
• As autumn arrives, the garden slows. The mood deepens. The light softens. What blooms fades gracefully.
Each season brings a new rhythm - and a reminder that peace often grows in the quiet.

Why Roses?

Roses are a reflection of everything we believe in:
Patience. Stillness. Presence.
We grow a wide variety of roses - from classic heirloom types to bolder modern blooms - in a space designed to invite wonder without distraction. While they’re not planted near the barn, they’re very much part of The Higher Calm’s soul.
Roses invite us to notice. To return. To grow alongside them.

Not Open Yet… But One Day

Right now, The Higher Calm is a private space - a quiet personal retreat for our family and a place we share with the world through photos, writing, and seasonal glimpses. But we have dreams.
In the future, we hope to welcome visitors to walk the paths, see the roses in person, and experience the blend of rustic charm and floral calm that defines this place. Until then, we’re tending to the soil, the vision, and the details that will help it bloom.

🌿 Calming Reflections
Calming Reflections is a series of short essays from The Higher Calm - written to share what nature teaches us when we slow down long enough to listen.
🌱 Entry One: Why Nature Slows Us Down
A Reflection from The Higher Calm
Being in nature reminds us we’re part of something much older, much wiser, and still unfinished. That’s what we feel every time we walk these paths - not just calm, but connected. The trees bend with time. The roses bloom when they’re ready. The wind carries stories older than we’ll ever be. And somehow, all of it seems to say the same thing: you’re part of this too.🕰️ Relearning the Rhythm
Modern life runs fast. But nature doesn’t.
It doesn’t rush to produce.
It doesn’t panic when a season ends.
It simply shifts. Pauses. Begins again.
Here at The Higher Calm, we’ve come to believe that slowing down isn’t about escape - it’s about returning... returning to our senses. To the rhythm of the earth. To the idea that purpose doesn’t come from pressure, but from presence.🌸 What the Garden Reminds Us
Among the flowering plants and winding paths on our North Carolina land, we’ve learned a few things worth repeating:
Stillness can be full... quiet doesn’t mean nothing is happening. It means everything has space to grow.
Beauty doesn’t bloom on command... our roses don’t check the clock. They open when the soil, sun, and spirit all agree it’s time.
We’re not here to outpace the world... we’re here to notice it. To walk through it. To be shaped by it.
The longer we spend tending the garden, the more it feels like the garden is tending us in return.🚪 You Can Be Here in Spirit
Right now, The Higher Calm isn’t open to the public. The walking paths, barn, and rose gardens are private - but they’re also real. And through every photo, every post, and every page, we share them in hopes that you’ll feel even a fraction of what we feel when we’re out there.
A little more grounded.
A little more present.
A little more connected to the whole, unfinished thing.
🌿 We believe that nature slows us down not to delay us - but to align us.💚 Whether you’re in a garden, on a porch, or simply breathing deep at your desk, you’re part of something bigger.🕊️ This is the first in our Calming Reflections series. More to come soon - including thoughts on stillness, the seasons, and why we grow what we grow.
